The route starts in the heart of the City of London, Bank Station, which has interchange with the Central, Northern and Waterloo & City Lines as well as with Monument Station served by the Circle and District Lines. The DLR departs from Platform 9 at 42m below sea level, and then continues eastwards on its way towards Lewisham.

The route emerges from the tunnel just past the Royal Mint, the place that makes all of England's money! It then joins the Tower Gateway branch, which is alongside the c2c mainline from Fenchurch Street to Southend & Shoeberryness. The next station is Shadwell, where interchange with the East London line is available below and its station is visible from the line (look out for the Underground roundel).
